Pakistan has in order to boost up its anti-terrorists operations, awarded a 68 million dollar contract to Harris Corporation for providing the Falcon-II tactical multi- band radios for its field forces. According to The Nation, the communication equipment, presently being used by the US field forces in its anti-terrorists operations and intelligence and communication purposes in Iraq and Afghanistan is believed to be best suited for field operations for communication between field units and headquarters.
Experts are of the opinion that the latest acquisition of the Falcon II radio sets by the Pakistan army will enhance its inter- operational activities with the US forces aimed against Al Qaeda militants and remnants of the Taliban militia believed to be holed up in the mountainous Wana region bordering Afghanistan. The paper quoted company officials as saying that the delivery of the systems will be completed by June 2005. "The service contracts will continue throughout 2005, which include onsite training, installation and maintenance. The advanced technology of our radios will enhance the capability of Pakistan's military to communicate up-to-the-minute intelligence between patrols and headquarters operations," the paper quoted a press released by the Harris Corporation as saying. "Under the terms of the contract, Harris will supply its RF- 5800H - an advanced, high-frequency (HF) SSB/VHF-FM radio that provides reliable and secure tactical communications - in the following quantities and configurations: 1,635 HF manpack radios, 1,635 HF vehicular radio systems, 50 high-power vehicular radio systems, six high-power base station systems, and two Radio Frequency Remote Control Systems. Ancillary equipment, spare and repair parts, support equipment, training services, and logistics support will also be provided by Harris," the release added. Sources further added that the sale of these radio sera is not part of the 300 million dollar military assistance package approved by the US Congress for the current fiscal year. |
