Man's best friend. Usually. But sometimes an unfriendly dog may threaten someone on the street. Now if you are trespassing on someone else's property and you chose to ignore the "Beware of Dog" sign, that is your own fault. However, if you are minding your own business and an aggressive dog crosses your path, that is a different story.
Dogs are complex animals and share many of the same feelings and emotions as humans. Just ask any dog lover or a family that considers the dog as a true family member. Many times you can read a dog's mannerisms as decide if the dog approaching you is attacking or exploring, threatening or friendly.
If you enjoy the luxury of being able to determine this from a safe distance, stand very still and attempt to be calm. If a dog does attack, try to remove your workout jacket or other item of clothing and give it to the dog. This may distract him or appease its curiosity. If you are knocked down or fall, curl into a ball and keep your hands over your ears and face. Try not to scream or roll around.
