UGL Uniccosm, a subsidiary of Australian company United Group Limited (UGL), has contributed an additional $30,000 to the Office of New Bostonians (ONB), an initiative of Mayor Thomas M. Menino. The contribution was personally presented to Mayor Menino by UGL Managing Director and CEO Richard Leupen on his first visit to Boston since UGL acquired UGL Unicco.
Commented Mr. Leupen, “With our investment in UGL Unicco, our largest operating unit in North America, UGL became part of the Boston community. Coincidentally, Boston is a sister city to Melbourne, the founding city for our United Group Services division that includes UGL Unicco. We’re pleased to continue Unicco’s tradition of support for Boston and especially of Mayor Menino’s Office of New Bostonians. We have a special interest in helping newcomers discover all that this great city has to offer.”
The Office of New Bostonians was established in 1998 to meet the needs of the growing and changing immigrant and newcomer communities in Boston. UGL Unicco’s grant specifically supports the English for New Bostonians (ENB) program. ENB is a public-private-community partnership within the ONB that helps low-income immigrants learn English. Since its founding in 2001, thousands of individuals have participated in its English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes.
“Many of the City's initiatives depend on the support of our public and private partners. UGL Unicco's donations to the Office of New Bostonians have enabled us to continue successful programming like ESOL training and cultural awareness events,” Mayor Menino said. “UGL Unicco has been a solid supporter of Boston over the years and we look forward to continuing that relationship.”
