UC Irvine Extension Prepares High Schoolers for College with Availability of New Online AP and Honors Courses
Publish Date : 2/25/2008 6:35:00 AM   Source : Education and Studies Onlypunjab.com

The University of California, Irvine Extension is now offering UC-approved Advanced Placement (AP) and Honors courses online to California high school students. Administrators can now provide students with college-level high school courses in mathematics, social sciences, and U.S. history, government and politics – all in preparation for students entering college and considering sitting for the College Board AP exams. Each course has been approved by the College Board and also satisfies the University of California a-g subject requirements that all University of California campuses and most four-year colleges and universities require for admission.

“As the continuing education arm of the University of California, Irvine, we seek to reach high school students preparing to enter four-year universities,” explained Dr. Gary W. Matkin, dean of continuing education at UC Irvine. “These online AP and Honors courses help prospective students become eligible for admission to the University of California, California State University, and most private colleges and universities.”

Courses are offered through a partnership agreement with the University of California College Prep Online (UCCP) program, which aims to prepare students for college by developing UC-quality online courses and content for California high schools and students. UC Irvine is the only University of California campus to offer these to courses to high school students.

“UCCP has provided online AP and Honors courses to high schools throughout California, but has now joined with partners like UC Irvine to help enhance students’ chances of getting into a UC or other college,” shared Rafael Granados, executive director of University of California College Prep Online. “This is a great tool for high schools that do not currently offer AP and Honors courses as well as homeschoolers and individual students cooperating with their high school.”

UC Irvine Extension will offer the following online courses for college-bound high school students beginning in September 2008:
Algebra I, semesters I and II
AP Calculus AB, semesters I and II
AP Calculus BC, semesters I and II
AP Statistics, semesters I and II
AP U.S. Government and Politics
AP U.S. History, semesters I and II
Honors Sociology

Interested high school administrators and students can learn more about UC Irvine Extension’s online AP and Honors courses by calling 949-824-5414 or visiting http://www.unex.uci.edu/collegeprep.
