The American Red Cross and TransCore Team to Provide U.S. Service Members in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait with Calling Cards
Publish Date : 12/14/2007 6:47:00 AM   Source : World News Onlypunjab.com

TransCore announced its Fleet Trailer Tracking Division has made a donation to the American Red Cross. The funds will be used to provide American troops stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait with more than 30,000 minutes of AT&T Global Calling Cards.

“The calling cards will allow men and women in the Armed Forces stationed in the Middle East to call home from base camps and forward combat areas,” said David Schrader, TransCore’s vice president of Marketing, Commercial Technology Group.

“This is a perfect example of how corporations, like TransCore, can get directly involved helping our service men and women,” said Neal Denton, senior vice president of Service to Armed Forces at the American Red Cross. “Enabling service members to connect with family and friends is one of the most valuable gifts we can provide.”

The idea stemmed from discussions about TransCore’s satellite-based trailer tracking solution.

“We were looking for a way to create a tie-in with our product and a worthy cause,” said Schrader. “The donation was based on taking a portion of the monthly air-time TransCore trailer tracking customers spend and contributing it to the calling card program.”

According to the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association, 40 percent of owner operators are veterans, and many more are company drivers – “So it was a natural fit – a way to say thank you to our customers that served our country and help keep our troops connected to their families,” said Schrader.

TransCore hopes the gift will inspire others to donate calling cards to military men and women. By participating in the “Help Our Troops Call Home” program sponsored by the Army & Air Force Exchange Service, anyone can help keep military families connected. Log on to www.aafes.org or call 800-527-2345. From there, Global Prepaid Phone cards may be sent to any service member through the American Red Cross and others. The Red Cross will handle logistics and distribution of the phone cards to service men and women in the area.

About the Red Cross

The American Red Cross helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Last year, almost a million volunteers and 35,000 employees helped victims of almost 75,000 disasters; taught lifesaving skills to millions; and helped U.S. service members separated from their families stay connected. Almost 4 million people gave blood through the Red Cross, the largest supplier of blood and blood products in the United States. The American Red Cross is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. An average of 91 cents of every dollar the Red Cross spends is invested in humanitarian services and programs. The Red Cross is not a government agency; it relies on donations of time, money, and blood to do its work.
