On its fourth and final day, the 1st Annual International Therapeutic Temperature Management Congress (TTM Congress) concluded with clear enthusiasm and a sure mark of success: solid plans already are underway for the follow-up event—the 2nd Annual TTM Congress is to be held in Barcelona, Spain from October 1st-3rd, 2008.
This year’s December 4-7th event, held in Cancun, Mexico, drew more than one hundred experts from around the globe to discuss clinical findings and best practices in therapeutic hypothermia and patient temperature modulation. Doctors, researchers, emergency medicine professionals, and solution vendors met to review the most promising induced hypothermia protocols and applications and outlined improving mortality rates and neurological outcome in both adult and pediatric patients affected by myocardial injury and cardiac arrest, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain and other head injury, stroke, asphyxia, and infection.
The exceptional list of presenting participants highlighted the rising visibility and use of temperature-based therapies. Leading investigators and practitioners represented the University Medical Center Utrecht (Netherlands), National Naval Medical Center (Bethesda, MD), Mission Hospital (Mission Viejo, CA), Alfred Hospital (Melbourne, Australia), Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh, PA), Regional One Air Medical Services (Spartanburg, SC), Duke University Medical Center (Durham, NC), University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, William Beaumont Hospital (Royal Oak, MI), University of California San Diego Stroke Center (San Diego, CA), Columbia University Medical Center (New York, NY), University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (Dallas, TX), and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (Pittsburgh, PA).
And, the list of unrestricted educational grant sponsors for the event demonstrated a level of collaborative thought leadership unique in the medical community.
