ActionEcho to Assist with Event Aimed at Reducing Sudden Death of Young Athletes
Publish Date : 1/7/2008 6:55:00 AM Source : Science and Technology News Onlypunjab.com
ActionEcho, a Richland-based mobile echocardiography service, will participate as a provider in the 1st Washington State Cardiac Screening Day being held at Bishop Blanchet High School in Seattle on January 17 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. This event is being held in cooperation with the Anthony Bates Foundation to facilitate the early detection of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM). HCM, an inherited heart condition which can cause sudden death in young athletes, is readily detectable through echocardiography. If diagnosed early it can be managed to reduce the risk of serious consequences. Young athletes from 12 - 22 years of age can receive a cardiac screening free of charge at the event.
ActionEcho owner Dr. Daniel F. Niendorff is intent on reducing deaths related to HCM. To that end he has committed both time and resources to help young athletes by participating in events such as this. "Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy is a silent killer. Some may remember the tragic death of college basketball star Hank Gathers during an NCAA playoff game in 1990. He died of HCM. Anthony Bates, a 20-year-old Division I football player for Kansas State University, also died suddenly of undetected HCM. To reduce these types of tragic deaths we make our equipment and expertise available free of charge to screen student athletes for HCM and we invite others to join with us in these types of efforts." Niendorff will travel to Seattle, along with two of his staff, to perform screenings and assist in interpreting the results.
The primary sponsor of this event is the Anthony Bates Foundation. Formed in 2002 after the tragic death of Anthony Bates, the foundation is dedicated to saving young lives through early detection of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. The Anthony Bates Foundation actively promotes education and awareness through training and free screening events around the U.S.
