In 1976, Massachusetts proclaimed a week in November "Adoption Week." Each year, the number of states that followed suite with their own adoption week, grew until November became National Adoption Month in 1990, with the Saturday before Thanksgiving set as National Adoption Day. Debra Shiveley Welch, author and advocate for adoption (particularly special needs adoption) does her part this year to raise awareness with her newly released book, "Son of My Soul - The Adoption of Christopher."
The purpose of National Adoption Month is to raise awareness of the growing number of children in need of loving families within our country, especially those within the welfare and foster care system. This year the focus is on special needs adoption.
"Special needs can mean a variety of circumstances, from mixed race to medical challenges, to sibling adoptions. There is a myth that there are many people standing in line to adopt special needs children. This is not true. Thousands of children are languishing in the system, waiting for a home - for love. Special Needs - shouldn't that translate to Special Love?" queries Welch. She goes on to say, "I never knew such joy could exist in this lifetime, until I adopted my special needs son. The journey we have taken together has created a bond that will never be broken, even until the end of time."
Welch is a top selling author who has achieved a reputation as a master storyteller and Son of My Soul follows that legacy.
Midwest Books' Senior Reviewer, Shirley Johnson has this to say about "Son of My Soul - The Adoption of Christopher," "A story of horror, pain, and rejection that is replaced with courage, hope, faith, love and victory. This is a book every adoptive parent should read, and every person who has a child of their heart, for in this read you will find the true meaning of love."
