I decided to check into the new internet hype SoonR.com. SoonR.com is a remote access tool to access your PC or a MAC at office or home, via your mobile phone. For this review, I used my iPhone, and decided to see if the features are really functional, and useful. To begin, I downloaded a small free application from their download section (available for Windows and Mac OSX platform), and began installation. The installation was smooth, and quick. Create a username, and password, and voila, the application is ready to use. SoonR, validates your mobile phone, and even sends you a text link to the site to begin your remote access experience. Within the SoonR.com application's preference setting, you pick the folders you want to be able to access remotely. So, I chose my picture folder, my law office document folder where all my client files are located, and started logged on into my account on my iPhone. Immediately, I remembered all the occasions where I was on the road, or away from my desktop, and a friend or colleague would call me to get a sample pleading, or a file, or when I was in court, and I wish I could have accessed my desktop for a file. Of course, you can always carry a memory card with a copy of your entire client file, or any file for that matter, given the low cost of high capacity memory cards, but then you also need to have your laptop around to access the memory card. No more, I was able to quickly browse folders I setup in my preference folder of SoonR, and was able to retrieve, and view Microsoft Word files, Pictures, or PDF files within seconds. I think this is going to be an awesome tool for any lawyer on the road, or for anyone who needs to have access to desktop files remotely. Now the best part: After you connect to your desktop via SoonR, you have options to:
- Use Spotlight on your mobile phone
- Check your email in your Mac Mail account
- Check, and view documents or files other SoonR users have shared with you
- Share files on your desktop to other SoonR users
- Email a file to anyone
- Support for Skype Chat
- Chat with other SoonR user
- Making international calls at very low rate
I must say, using SoonR on Apple's iPhone was just great, because of the screen size, and functionality. Although SoonR can be used virtually any mobile phone, phones with larger screens certainly have an advantage. Looking at photographs, or presentation files on my iPhone was of course, unbeatable by any other mobile phone, and given the large size of the screen, reading Word documents, or PDF files was just a marvelous experience. As I mentioned, SoonR is available for Mac OSX and Windows, and therefore, for all of you Microsoft Outlook users, SoonR does work with Outlook, though I have not tested it on a Windows platform. According to their website, the service for the most is free, but the paid subscribers will have additional functionality like, accessing you desktop even if your desktop is turned off, low rate international calling, and encrypted backup. SoonR is still in a Beta stage, but having tested it, I suspect it will be out of Beta stage in no time. So, with SoonR, you share your MS Word files, images, and even presentation files with anyone with an email, or other SoonR users seamlessly.
