Helping to propel the national movement toward interoperability of devices and software, B. Braun Medical Inc, a global leader in innovative healthcare products and services, highlights its portfolio of healthcare information technology (IT) solutions at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society Annual Conference and Exhibition (HIMSS), being held Feb. 25-28 in Orlando. Visitors to the HIMSS Interoperability Showcase (Booth #7376) and B. Braun’s Booth (#1615) will experience how smart pump technology is seamlessly integrated into a facility’s IT platform to provide healthcare providers with the information needed to deliver more efficient, effective and accurate patient care.
Providing a glimpse at the future, B. Braun will demonstrate the advanced capabilities of its Outlook® Safety Infusion System and DoseTrac™ Infusion Management Software as a participant in the HIMSS Interoperability Showcase. The Showcase offers an interactive demonstration, enabling attendees to experience connectivity and interoperability in real-world patient care scenarios as they create and manage their own virtual health record and access it across multiple care settings.
“B. Braun’s participation as the sole smart pump participant in the 52 vendor Interoperability Showcase underscores its commitment in the advancement of healthcare IT and the adoption of common standards for device connectivity,” says Scott Zaffrin, RN, ET, IS Connectivity Product Director for B. Braun Medical Inc. “As progress toward standard IT solutions continues, smart pumps will play an essential role not only in helping providers better analyze infusion therapy data and provide real-time monitoring, but also exchange information across department lines for streamlined care.”
Recently named “Best in KLAS” for Smart Pump Technology in KLAS’s 2007 Year-End Report, the Outlook® Safety Infusion System automates IV pump programming to reduce manual programming errors and improve safety. The DoseTrac™ Infusion Management Software’s open architecture design allows it to interface with any hospital or pharmacy information management system.
In the Showcase, B. Braun will offer a peek at its IHE-PCD project work, featuring the use of PCD01 and PCD02 with the DoseTrac™ Infusion Management Software, an application of the Outlook® system. The current application, PCD01, allows users to define a minimum data standard for communications. Building upon the advanced capabilities of PCD01, the new application, PCD02 further streamlines the process of selecting specific patients, timeframes, frequencies, locations and device types obtained from smart pumps. Users can easily customize the way data is viewed and display the information in a format that is best suited to their facility’s needs.
The 2008 Interoperability Showcase will be set up as a HIMSS Health Information Exchange (HIE) based environment. Clinical scenarios with enhanced privacy and security will be enabled by the standards-based Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) framework.
Bridging the Gap
Addressing the needs of the present while laying the groundwork for the future, B. Braun will display its complete offering of healthcare IT solutions that are available today to help healthcare providers achieve a safe, effective and efficient practice.
“The infusion pump market is continually evolving as pumps are becoming extensions of a hospital’s IT platform, providing connectivity from bedside to hospital information systems and beyond,” adds Zaffrin. “Pumps are now fully integrated to share drug usage data throughout a facility and even across departments.”
Along with its award-winning smart pumps, B. Braun will feature its DoseTrac™ Infusion Management Software, which allows real-time monitoring of IV therapies. With the ability to monitor, trend, report and manage the IV administration process, DoseTrac™ provides both end users and hospital information management systems with real-time and retrospective information to help ensure patient safety.
