Do you know how to use color? Are you familiar with a color wheel? Did you ever visit a paint section in the store and see all the color combinations? When choosing colors for your wedding, start with the most obvious choices: your favorite color, a seasonal color or if you are using a theme, base your colors around the theme.
When determining your colors, keep in mind the story you are telling about your wedding and what type of atmosphere you want to create. If you want a soft and romantic look, using fire engine red will not suffice. If you want a hip and fun wedding that is funky and chic, using soft pinks and greens won't cut it.
You also have to decide if you want a monochromatic look (all one color), a complementary look (opposites) or an analogous look (colors side by side on the color wheel).
Monochromatic colors are the same but vary in lightness and also saturation.
Analogous colors are any three colors which are side by side on a 12 part color wheel, such as yellow-green, yellow, and yellow-orange. Usually one of the three colors will predominate.
Complementary colors are any two colors which are directly opposite each other, such as red and green and red-purple and yellow-green.
Remember too, that different colors mean different things related to culture. So if you are combining ethnicities at your wedding, be sure to read up on the meaning of colors, so as not to offend anyone.
