ReCellular Offers Businesses a "Triple Bottom Line" Recycling Solution for Wireless Equipment
Publish Date : 1/6/2008 5:06:00 AM   Source : Mobile and Gadgets News Onlypunjab.com

ReCellular, experts in refurbished cell phones, has introduced the first program to recycle cell phones tailored to the needs of business leaders focused on the economic, social, and environmental impacts of their business. ReCellular Enterprise (www.recellularenterprise.com) offers businesses a source of income from recycling, unmatched data-security processes, charitable and social benefits, environmentally friendly recycling certified to ISO 140001:2000 standards.

"As entrepreneurs, we understand the social, economic, and environmental pressures facing businesses," says Suman Dutta, Vice President, ReCellular Enterprise division, "and we are proud to offer a solution to recycle cell phones that respects their 'Triple Bottom Line.'"

Economic Bottom Line
ReCellular has led the industry for 15 years, collecting a record 6 million phones in 2007 alone. By leveraging the volume of phones collected, and the company's expertise in recycling, ReCellular has developed a successful business model for extracting value from discarded phones and distributing refurbished cell phones. As a result, ReCellular offers business clients a solution for disposing of unused wireless equipment that contributes to income, rather than overhead.

Prices vary by model and condition, but phones can range from $30 for a Blackberry 7290 up to $150 for a Blackberry 8800.

ReCellular Enterprise also provides economic security by protecting confidential corporate and consumer information that could be used for identity theft. The issue of information security has grown exponentially with the increased use of multi-function smart phones that store e-mail messages, contact information, and calendar entries. The convenience of these integrated devices also adds to their risk, with the average smart phone capable of storing thousands of documents containing confidential information.

To protect this cache of corporate information, ReCellular Enterprise offers clients a proprietary 73 point data-deletion process that securely scrubs all data from wireless handsets, including both the handset SIM card and removable memory storage.

Social Bottom Line
Some businesses choose to use this income to offset the cost of new communications technologies as well as to supplement their existing charitable contributions, according to Dutta:

"Many companies already donate their old phones to charitable organizations. What they may not realize is about half of the phones ultimately are delivered to ReCellular for refurbishment or recycling. By delivering the phones directly to ReCellular, businesses can eliminate the middle man, and increase the value of their donations."

ReCellular pioneered the cash-for-phones charitable fundraising program, and currently works with 50 charitable groups across the U.S. In 2007, ReCellular provided more than $20 million in funds for charities, including Cell Phones for Soldiers, the March of Dimes, and Verizon Wireless Hopeline.

As an added social benefit, approximately half of the phones collected are refurbished and resold, with the majority going to developing countries. There, access to communications can often have a profound benefit for both business development and individual quality of life. According to the United Nations (U.N.), the availability of telecommunications is the second biggest influencer on a nation's gross national product, second only to access to healthcare services. In addition, the U.N. reports that wireless communication access has now exceeded landline access around the world, as wireless towers are more cost effective than stringing landline infrastructure in developing countries.

Environmental Bottom Line: ISO 14001: 2000 Certified Recycling
Obsolete or non-functional phones are dismantled and recycled to reclaim valuable materials, such as: gold, silver and palladium from circuit boards; copper wiring from phone chargers; nickel, iron, cadmium and lead from battery packs; and plastic from cases and accessories. ReCellular's zero-waste policy dictates that all donated materials are recycled, including cardboard, paper and plastic shipping materials - diverting more than 1 million pounds of materials from landfills in 2007.

ReCellular's environmental management processes are verified by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001:2000 certification, a voluntary standard that facilitates improved environmental business management.

"Only ReCellular can offer businesses the confidence of 15 years of experience, certified disposal practices, and a written audit trail for data security," says Dutta. "As a result, we feel ReCellular is the very best solution for businesses looking to keep their organization's technology, and the potential toxic waste they may produce, out of landfills."
