Arthur Dyson, a native Californian, discovered early on in life that his attraction to architecture came not through what he saw and liked, but rather what seemed to be missing. Many of the buildings he encountered lacked something critically important. When he did come across a design that pleased, people usually said that it looked like one by Frank Lloyd Wright. In 1953 some thoughtful person gave Dyson a copy of the House Beautiful issue that illustrated the work of Wright. By age eighteen, Dyson managed to become a Taliesin Apprentice.

Once while looking over his work at the drafting table, Wright told Dyson that his work was "Goffian." Dyson was later relieved to understand that Wright meant Bruce Goff, not some form of medieval architecture. With that casual comment, Wright directed Dyson toward the next phase of his apprenticeship. Following the death of Frank Lloyd Wright in 1959, Dyson sought out Goff and obtained a position with his office. To the thorough grounding in creative compositional technique gained at Taliesin, Dyson added the experimental, highly creative attitude toward building materials that was such a prominent characteristic of designs by Bruce Goff.
