Highly Acclaimed Novel Explores a Young Jewish Woman's Changing Life Dreams
Publish Date : 2/18/2008 8:09:00 AM   Source : Asia Pacific News Onlypunjab.com

Bored with her life and spellbound by dreams of a Hollywood-style romance, Judith Weissman makes a radical choice in hopes of finding the life she's always wanted. Author Beverly Magid paints a complex, sympathetic character with this young Jewish woman, who quickly captivates readers in Magid's compelling new novel "Flying Out of Brooklyn" (ISBN 9780595455867, iUniverse, 2007).

Set in New York City's vibrant Williamsburg neighborhood in the summer of 1943, "Flying Out of Brooklyn" takes readers back to a time of both incredible opportunity and uncertainty for women in the United States. While everyone else is concentrating on World War II, Judith Weissman is faced with her lackluster marriage, mundane job in a critical, gossipy neighborhood. The war has opened exciting workplace opportunities for many women, but Judith is trapped in a job without any stimulation or possibility of advancement. Like her husband, she feels as if she's been classified 4F: unfit to serve in the military.

When her highschool crush, Bobby Levitt, returns home a wounded war hero, Judith finds herself emotionally seduced. She begins an affair with the injured soldier, hoping to finally gain the passionate life of her dreams. "Flying Out of Brooklyn" follows Judith on a journey of self-discovery, as she learns the hard way that nothing ever stays the same, not even her longest-held dreams.

Academy Award-winning actor Martin Landau and Janet Fitch, author of "White Oleander" and "Paint it Black" have praised "Flying Out of Brooklyn" as an "evocative, heartfelt" coming-of-age story and "an amazing trip back in time." Whether readers deem Judith's choices as unwise, or cheer on her active decisions, all will find themselves caught up in this young woman's enthralling story of growth and discovery. "Flying Out of Brooklyn" is a vivid novel that speaks with strength and wisdom about the nature of relationships, the search for ideas and often-unexpected consequences of our life choices.
