The Board of Trustees of the Economic Club of New York, one of the nation's oldest and pre-eminent speaking platforms for major global business, financial, and political figures, today announced new leadership of the 100-year-old, non-partisan organization: economist Dr. Robert Glenn Hubbard and journalist Jan Hopkins.
Ms. Hopkins, an Emmy and Peabody Award-winner and former CNN anchor, has been tapped to serve as President of the organization, the first woman to fill this post. She succeeds Paul Bateman, who held the job since 2004. Ms. Hopkins now runs her own communications consulting firm, the Jan Hopkins Group.
Dr. Hubbard, Dean of Columbia University's Graduate School of Business and former Chairman of the U.S. Council of Economic Advisors under George W. Bush, has been named Chairman of the non-profit Economic Club of New York, which currently numbers more than 750 of the nation's top-ranking business leaders as members.
Dr. Hubbard succeeds Barbara Hackman Franklin, the Secretary of Commerce in George H.W. Bush's administration, and the first woman to serve as Chairman of the Economic Club of New York, who had been chair since 2003.
In a joint statement about their appointments, Dr. Hubbard and Ms. Hopkins said: "As the justly renowned Economic Club enters its second century, we are both extremely honored to lead this distinguished organization, which will continue to provide a unique platform for the movers and shakers shaping policy on the world business, financial, and political scene."
Prior to her longtime anchor/correspondent role at CNN Financial News, Ms. Hopkins worked for ABC World News Tonight and, earlier, for CBS Network News. Leaving CNN, she joined Citigroup as Managing Director and Head of Client Communications. She left the Citigroup Private Bank unit in 2005 to form her own New York-based strategic communications consulting company.
