The respiratory therapy students at Pima Medical Institute, 7475 Dakin St., Suite 100 in Denver captured 3rd place in the National Student Sputum Bowl competition held in Orlando, Florida. The Sputum Bowl is a knowledge contest that has been around since the late 1970s and is a part of every American Association of Respiratory Care (AARC) convention. PMI was one of the few career colleges represented in the 14-state competition, and the Denver campus competed against other school's with Bachelor's programs.
PMI's student team consisted of Liza Gibbs, Brian Hurley, Zach Quinby and Patrick Sullivan. The primary objectives of the Student Sputum Bowl Competition are to stimulate interest in the current knowledge and practice of respiratory care, to call peer attention to the achievements of the respiratory care program in the area, and to provide academically stimulating entertainment at the annual symposium. "We encourage our students to be the very best they can be," said Sue Anderson, campus director of the Denver career college. "As a small campus and career college, it could be argued that we were underdogs to even win the Colorado state championship, much less capturing third in the national competition. But with motivated students, a dedicated staff and our commitment to help bring out the best in each and every student, amazing things can be accomplished. Needless to say we are extremely proud of all of them." Placing third in the Sputum Bowl is one of many accomplishments of the respiratory therapy program at PMI's Denver campus. In 2005 the Respiratory Therapy program at PMI was the recipient of the Health Educator Award from the American Lung Association of Colorado and student, Vicky Hedberg, was awarded the 2005 Student of the Year Award in the Allied Heath Specialist--Clinical category. The school has won the Colorado state Sputum Bowl competition 10 years in a row. This year PMI won both the student and overall title in Colorado, as well as capturing first place in the national competition in 2005 and 2006. Graduates of the 88 credit-hour respiratory therapy program receive an Associate of Occupational Science degree. The Denver campus also has programs for Dental Assistant, Medical Assistant, Medical Administrative Assistant, Ophthalmic Medical Technician, Pharmacy Technician, Phlebotomy Technician, Physical Therapist Assistant, Radiography Technician, Respiratory Therapy and Veterinary Assistant. PMI is one of the premier medical career colleges in the western United States. The privately owned, accredited school provides students with a well-rounded education embracing theoretical classroom studies, as well as on-site training in allied health facilities within the community. This gives the student the opportunity to function in a working environment. |
