CIGNA is proud to sponsor the Philadelphia Orchestra’s 18th Annual Tribute Concert honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., to be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21 at Martin Luther King High School, 6100 Stenton Ave.
This special program will celebrate the life, message and work of Dr. King and will include performances by the Philadelphia Orchestra under the direction of guest conductor Thomas Wilkins, as well as a choir of voices from the Philadelphia All City Choir, directed by Dorina Morrow.
CIGNA has sponsored this concert since its inception in 1990, and, for the third year in a row, the company's significant contribution will allow the concert to be free and open to the public. Before the music begins, H. Edward Hanway, CIGNA Corporation chairman and chief executive officer will announce the total amount of funds raised throughout the Philadelphia region to support the building of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial in Washington, D.C. Additionally, the CIGNA Philadelphia Young Dreamers will be acknowledged during the program.
In 2007, CIGNA – through the CIGNA Foundation – became the first local company to contribute one million dollars to the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial. CIGNA has also taken a leadership role in raising awareness of the Memorial. Hanway chaired the Philadelphia Dream Dinner held in November 2007 at the National Constitution Center, one of a series of celebrations held in cities that have provided outstanding leadership in the drive to complete the historic monument. At the dinner, the Young Dreamers – young leaders 12-22 years old recommended to CIGNA by area community organizations – were recognized for achievements in the face of adversity that make them “living memorials” to Dr. King.
“The opportunity to honor Dr. King’s timeless message of service and peace through the musical artistry of The Philadelphia Orchestra, as well as through the remarkable accomplishments of the Philadelphia Young Dreamers, holds deep significance for CIGNA. It is a privilege to be associated with this annual tribute to Dr. King,” Hanway said.
