Living With Diabetes
Publish Date : 2/22/2008 7:56:00 AM   Source : Health News Onlypunjab.com

Living with diabetes can be easy if you take control of the illness instead of allowing it to take control of you. Many people, when first diagnosed with diabetes, go into a state of denial. They feel that the doctor must somehow be wrong. They look for ways to make the disease go away. The most dangerous thing that many people with diabetes do is to pretend that they do not have the disease.

If untreated, diabetes can lead to death. Plain and simple, it can cause your organs to shut down, namely your kidneys first, and can cause you to die. If treated, a person can expect to live a long, full life despite the illness. What would you rather do?

Most people will opt for the latter, when put in these terms. However, many diabetic patients seem to go for the former. Why? Because they refuse to believe that there is anything wrong. The issue of having diabetes scares them and they do not want to acknowledge the fact that they have this illness. As a result, they allow the disease to take control of them, instead of vice versa.

Taking control of diabetes is the first thing that you should do when you find out that you have the disease. Be thankful that there are ways to keep this disease in control. Take medications and monitor your blood glucose levels as ordered by the doctor. Depending on your blood levels, you may or may not be prescribed insulin. Conservative treatment of diabetes is oral medications at first. If these do not do the job of controlling the blood sugars, then the doctor will prescribe insulin.

Medications must be taken regularly and blood sugars must be monitored. This is crucial for proper treatment. Most blood glucose monitors record your sugar levels. You need to do this to show the doctor so he or she can make sure that you are getting the proper dosage of medication.

Once you have your blood sugars under control, you need to keep them under control by continuing to monitor your blood glucose levels and taking your medication. You should make sure that you always have diabetic supplies on hand. If you want to save money with these supplies, take a look online and find a place that will deliver them to your door. This is generally much cheaper than purchasing the supplies in the drug store and you can get everything very quickly.

You should also make sure that you eat a balanced diet and eliminate foods that are high in simple carbohydrates. Eliminate soda from your diet altogether and cut back on complex carbohydrates such as starches, pasta and rice. Substitute whole wheat flour instead of white flour.

There are many cookbooks on the market for diabetics. You should invest in one of these books. It is also important that you learn as much about the condition as you possibly can. Remember that the more you learn, the better equipped you are to fight the disease.
