The Kaplan Leadership Program has announced a February 1, 2008 deadline for applications from community college students looking to join its third cohort. Successful applicants will receive financial support to attend bachelor’s degree programs after their graduation from community college, along with a broad range of services including individualized advising and academic preparation, leadership training, mentoring and career counseling.
The first cohort of Scholars has already successfully transferred to four-year schools such as American University and Morehouse College. A second cohort is now in the process of applying to four-year schools.
The second cohort includes Aaron Hudson, who served eight years in the Marine Corps before becoming a Kaplan Scholar, and is president of LaGuardia Community College’s Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Chapter. “Before entering the program, continuing to a bachelor’s program was not an immediate goal,” he said. “Now I can make education my focus and I’ll have no excuse if I fail to achieve my dreams.”
Scholars typically receive tens of thousands each year in scholarships, living stipends and services. The Foundation also assists program participants for the duration of their bachelor’s degree programs, working with them and their campus academic advisors. According to Foundation Director Jennifer Benn, “Kaplan Scholars are supported through the transfer process and completion of their bachelor’s degrees, so that they can achieve their academic and career goals and eventually become leaders in their communities.”
The program is funded by the Kaplan Educational Foundation. Information and application requirements are available online at http://www.kaplanedfoundation.org.
