Janet Langhart Cohen, Wife of Former U.S. Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen, Introduces Play “Anne and Emmett” in Israel
Publish Date : 1/19/2008 3:01:00 AM Source : American Local News Onlypunjab.com
Playwright and television journalist Janet Langhart Cohen, with her husband former U.S. Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen, will introduce her one-act play, "Anne and Emmett," inspired by Anne Frank and Emmett Till, to a diverse group of students in Israel next week to commemorate the life and work of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Mrs. Langhart Cohen, who was a student and friend of Dr. King, will be speaking to Jewish and Arab high school and college students in classes that focus on diversity, multiculturalism, coexistence and human rights.
"I find it sweet and ironic to be introducing this play in Israel. I am an African American woman, married to a man with Jewish roots. And having known Dr. King and to be in Israel on the celebration of his birthday -- it is beautifully poetic to me," said Langhart Cohen. "This is an opportunity to introduce this play to an international audience of children who are the ages that Anne Frank and Emmett Till were.
“I want to deliver to the students my American story of progress and promise and the realization of Dr. King’s dream, and I also want to listen to their feelings, hopes and dreams."
“Anne and Emmett,” is a fictional conversation between Anne Frank and Emmett Till, teenagers who were murdered, one because she was Jewish, and one because he was black. The play reveals through dialogue the commonality of the struggle shared by the Jewish people and African Americans. Their stories both inspired and informed social awareness and positive change around racial, religious and ethnic differences in the United States and abroad. It offers the chance to open a dialogue on anti-Semitism and racism. |
