Management Mentors Says Mentoring and "The Karate Kid" Are Alike: Technology Shouldn’t Replace "Human Touch"
Publish Date : 10/30/2007 9:15:00 AM Source : IT and Management News Onlypunjab.com
Management Mentors discusses link between mentoring and themes from the movie "The Karate Kid" in its upcoming Internet radio show "Mentoring Matters: Mentoring in Today’s Business World" on the VoiceAmerica Business Channel on Friday, November 2, 2007, from 9-10 a.m. (EDT). People can listen directly from their PCs in the comfort of their homes or offices. Management Mentors' shows will also be archived so listeners can listen whenever they want.
Management Mentors president and radio host Rene Petrin says, "Mentoring is about relationships. To illustrate this, think back to the popular movie 'The Karate Kid.' Mr. Miyagi mentored Ralph Macchio's character, Daniel LaRusso. And while Daniel could have learned--and, indeed, attempted to learn different moves and karate techniques from books and by observing people--it was Mr. Miyagi's words of wisdom, hands-on approach, and the time he spent with Daniel that made the difference. For a more contemporary example, think about coaches in the NFL today--players and coaches have endless high-tech tools at their disposal, such as video. But that doesn't replace the nurturing of players through human contact."
Petrin goes on to explain that the same is true with mentoring today. Technology, with all its benefits, can never replace the human touch. But that doesn't mean technology can't complement your mentoring program. For this show, Nancy Settle-Murphy, president and owner of Guided Insights, will join Petrin. Nancy is a virtual meeting facilitator and team-building coach. They’ll discuss using online systems to manage mentoring and using technology to train people about mentoring while maintaining the human-touch element that's critical to mentoring success.
Upcoming Internet radio show topics for "Mentoring Matters" include the following: recruitment and mentoring, how to start a mentoring program, how to manage a mentoring program, success stories, communication strategies, plus much, much more.
