Calling all baking educators! The Home Baking Association (HBA) has announced the details for participating in the association's annual Educator Award Contest. Each year the association seeks to reward educators who have implemented outstanding programs that teach children to bake and share baking in their communities.

Classroom educators and community youth organization program leaders are eligible to enter. Family and consumer science educators and youth leaders for 4-H, Boys and Girls Clubs, Camp Fire USA and other after-school or community programs are encouraged to share successful community baking programs. Youth who have developed baking programs that teach other youth to bake are also invited to enter.

Two Wisconsin School for the Visually Handicapped educators received the 2007 Home Baking Association Educator Award for their "Muffins in Motion" entry. Peggy Trainor, Visually Impaired Daily Living Skills teacher and Kate Mennenga, Occupational Therapist, from the Wisconsin School for the Visually Handicapped, Janesville, WI won $1,000 and a trip to Fort Myers, Florida to the Home Baking Association (HBA) Annual Meeting.

Visually impaired students received "real life experiences" through a Braille Bakery in the classroom. Other areas incorporated into the lesson included real life math and science experiences. A special resource sheet with tips for baking with special need students can be downloaded free from www.homebaking.org. Previous winning entries can also be found at www.homebaking.org. "Muffins in Motion" will be posted in January 2008.

HBA believes baking plays an important role in the development of healthy children that are socially and academically well-rounded.    Baking provides an opportunity to share family time and a joy of baking with others.

The Home Baking Association is a national, nonprofit trade association. Realizing today's students are tomorrow's parents and professionals, the HBA supports their development by producing quality educational materials. Twenty-eight corporate and association members also provide excellent baking resources. For more information on HBA resource materials and a list of member resources, visit www.homebaking.org.
