10 Tips to Keep Your Puppy Healthy and Happy
Publish Date : 8/14/2007 9:31:00 PM   Source : Animals and Nature News Onlypunjab.com.

Puppies, much like infants, need supervision, loving care, and are dependent upon us for just about all of their needs. It’s up to us as responsible pet parents to see that puppy has everything they’ll need to grow up to be a healthy, happy dog.

10. Be watchful of health problems: Nipping health problems in the bud are the best way to protect your furry friend. Puppy’s eyes should always be bright and free of any discharge, although some breeds do frequently have secretions from their eyes that are normal. The nostrils should also be free from discharge, and puppy’s coat should look clean and shiny.

9. Check puppy’s ears often for signs of infection: Chronic ear infections plague many dogs, and can be rather painful. While gently petting your pup, briefly check inside of their ears for signs of infection. Yeast is a common culprit for causing infections, as well as bacteria or fungus. Some dogs may have allergies to food or something in the environment that causes their ears to become irritated, and if left untreated, infected.

8. Brush your puppy every day: Not only is brushing an excellent way for you to bond and be close to your puppy, but it helps to keep their coat healthy and shiny. Brushing also allows you to check their skin and fur for any abnormalities or problems. You’ll want to choose a brush that’s best suited for your particular type of dog’s fur.

7. Give puppy plenty of safe exercise: While different breeds and sizes of dogs need varying amounts of exercise, a tired puppy is usually a happy and content puppy. Since their tiny bodies are still developing, it’s important to supervise play and exercise time, and to avoid any rough or strenuous play. Start out with short walks a few times a day.

6. Vaccinate your puppy: Consult with your veterinarian with any questions about which vaccines are needed at what times to keep your puppy their absolute healthiest.

5. Keep your puppy’s environment clean and safe: Proper house training as soon as you bring puppy home is essential for a clean, healthy environment, not to mention an odor-free home. All of puppy’s bedding should be washed weekly using a mild detergent, and aired out on a daily basis to remove excess hair or pests.

4. Keep puppy worm-free and flea-free: Fleas, worms, and ticks can all wreak havoc on a household and cause your friend considerable distress or illness. However, many flea or tick treatments may be too harsh for a young puppy, so it’s best to consult the label or ask your vet to recommend a safe way to prevent these pests.

3. Socialize your puppy: After your puppy has had all of his vaccinations, be sure to encourage play with other puppies, friendly dogs, and children. Puppies, or any dogs for that matter, should never be left to play unsupervised.

2. Provide puppy with fresh water and food: The amount of food to give puppy will depend on their age and breed. But all dogs, regardless of age or breed, should have access to a fresh supply of water at all times.

1. Love your puppy: You can never love your puppy too much. Be sure to pet him or her every day, lavish them with love and attention, and then reap the special rewards that only a dog owner can understand.
