Hard Drive!, by former Seagate R&D employee Gordon Hughes, offers a unique and remarkably gripping story of this pioneer in the computer disk manufacturing field. Presented as an adventure novel, yet based upon true events, it is told through the eyes of one of Seagate's early engineering executives, who alternatively thrived and survived as the company went though the financial and emotional roller coaster typical of such firms -- from heady triumphs to harsh business crashes.
This book, like no other, presents the disruptive technologies and "creative destruction" evidenced by Seagate's pioneering work in hard disk drives. Their amazing story, beginning with the company's earliest efforts as a Silicon Valley startup, is framed in the context of the inevitable progress of technology, stretching back to the computer revolution that began over two centuries ago in Victorian England.
Fascinating to computer wonks and technical project managers, Hard Drive! will also be of great interest to anyone captivated by technology and the hurdles it must overcome, particularly in the realm of computers. In addition, Hughes touches upon the realities of corporate competition, globalization, U.S. tax policies that encourage overseas outsourcing, and the effects of lawsuits.
