Banned Plastic Shopping Bags Turned Into Eco-Hip Handbags by Conserve
Publish Date : 11/21/2007 5:11:00 AM   Source : Animals & Nature News OnlyPunjab.com

San Francisco became the first U.S. city to ban plastic shopping bags, but a nonprofit organization called Conserve has discovered a way to recycle those banned bags to create fashionable eco-hip handbags. And online retailer Just Nature Skin Care is bringing those European-style handbags to the U.S. market this holiday season to support the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS).

Conserve employs hundreds of underprivileged women in Delhi to collect up to 6,000 discarded plastic shopping bags each day and deliver them back to the production facility. The bags are sanitized, sorted by color, and then arranged in beautiful patterns on a blank canvas.

The canvas is fed into a heating unit where the plastic is fused together forming a single, colorful sheet of Handmade Recycled Plastic (HRP).

Fashion designers from London and Paris have created handbag patterns (templates) for the women to cut from the HRP sheets and then sew into stylish, European-style handbags. Conserve supports over 300 impoverished families via this fair trade model. To view the various bag styles and colors, visit www.JustNatureSkinCare.com and click on Planet Charity

In addition to supporting Conserve's environmental work, 100% of the profits from handbag sales by Just Nature Skin Care through December 31, 2007 will benefit the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS). TAPS serves as a compassionate resource for U.S. Military families coping with the grief of losing a loved one through active duty.

More than 50 recycled bags are used to make each handbag. The purses are hand-sewn and created from Handmade Recycled Plastic, so no two bags are exactly alike. Only 100 handbags per day are produced.

Online retailer Just Nature Skin Care has teamed up with Conserve to offer the 'eco-hip' handbags as part of a "Green Holiday Season Charity" event. The partnership builds on Just Nature Skin Care's commitment to nature and giving back to the community.

"We saw the eco-friendly handbags as a positive reminder of how each of us can make a difference when it comes to the environment," says Barbara Miller, Marketing Manager with Just Nature Skin Care. "And when it comes to making a difference, the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors rises to the top. TAPS is a remarkable organization and the assistance it provides to military families has never been more important."

Conserve Handbags are available through the Just Nature Skin Care web site under Planet Charity.
