Four Tips on Knowing When Video Games are a Problem

Video games have been called into question with another horrific event, this time in the murder of Baby Grace. With violence in our midst, how can a person tell if games are a contributor?
The majority of players is able to differentiate reality from fantasy and can function well at work or school even after an intense session of assaulting the virtual enemy. But, what about those who have a difficult time?
How can someone tell if there are problems brewing? Dr. Kourosh Dini, child and adult psychiatrist, reports of those he sees with problematic gaming in his practice, that there are several signs to consider:
- Failing responsibilities such as chores or homework,
- Neglecting basic needs such as food and sleep,
- Changes in behavior or mood such as irritability, and
- Changes in relationships such as friends and family."
Dr. Dini has a successful private practice in the downtown Chicago area. His fellowship thesis at the University of Chicago focused on the topic of Video Games and Mental Health. He also plays video games and maintains a well-regarded avatar in the virtual environment of Second Life.
