Fuel Tech, Inc. (Nasdaq: FTEK), a world leader in advanced engineering solutions for the optimization of combustion systems in utility and industrial applications, today announced it was awarded its first FUEL CHEM® demonstration program in India. The demonstration, scheduled to commence next quarter, will be conducted on a large coal-fired boiler operated by one of India’s largest industrial enterprises.
The unit to be treated currently burns higher heating value coals imported from Indonesia. Such coals are often characterized by lower ash fusion temperatures, which can create slagging and reduce efficiency in certain combustion units.
John F. Norris Jr., President and Chief Executive Officer, commented, “We are truly elated to have penetrated the vast Indian market with our first FUEL CHEM initiative. As one of India’s largest independent power producers, this client represents an attractive candidate for demonstrating a technology that is not well known in that part of the world. We believe a successful demonstration will provide the needed exposure to help accelerate the introduction of TIFI™ Targeted In-Furnace Injection™ technology into other Indian facilities faced with similar slagging and efficiency problems.”
Mr. Norris continued, “With annual coal-fired electricity generation capacity exceeding 71 gigawatts, and projections of rapid economic expansion, India represents one of the world’s largest and fastest growing power generation markets. Much of this incremental growth is expected to be fueled by imported coals, which often have problematic slag characteristics.”
Mr. Norris concluded, “This announcement represents another milestone in the deployment of TIFI technology. With our recent success in the People’s Republic of China, we are well positioned to grow our FUEL CHEM business in the two countries that the International Energy Agency predicts will account for 80% of the world’s growth in coal consumption during the next two decades.”
