Protokraft Introduces Spitfire Family of Mil-Dtl-38999 Based Ethernet Optical Media Converters
Publish Date : 1/19/2008 7:47:00 AM Source : Networking News Onlypunjab.com
Protokraft today announced the introduction of the Spitfire Series of Mil-Dtl-38999 Ethernet Optical Media Converters to simplify avionics equipment designs and improve Ethernet network performance and reliability in harsh environment applications. Protokraft adds the new Spitfire series to its previously announced Lightning and Magnum series of harsh environment optoelectronic interfaces to offer a comprehensive optical component solution for Military and Commercial avionics optical networks.
The Spitfire Series of Mil-Dtl-38999 Ethernet Optical Media Converter are available in Single, Dual and Quad port versions and are designed for military, aerospace, industrial or utility applications where significant levels of shock, vibration and extreme temperature ranges are experienced. Spitfire series Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet media converters consist of optoelectronic transmitter and receiver functions integrated along with the Ethernet media conversion circuitry into a wall mount Mil-Dtl-38999 connector assembly. The optical transmitters are high output 850nM VCSEL lasers or 1310nm LED's. The optical receivers consist of GaAs or InGaAs PIN and preamplifier assemblies and limiting post-amplifiers.
The electrical interface to the Spitfire series optical media converters is a Mil-Dtl-83513 Micro D-Subminiature pin connector enabling interconnection to a customer supplied flexible circuit or cable assembly. Spitfire series Ethernet media converters are vibration isolated, environmentally hardened components designed for use in harsh environment applications.
Spitfire series bulkhead mounted Ethernet media converters enable high speed network communications over long distances in harsh environments.
- Ethernet switches and peripherals
- Telecom and datacom switch / router rack-to-rack links
- Storage or computation clusters
The Mil-Dtl-38999, Series III shell provides a sealed optical interface that is water-tight to Mil-Std-810 when mated. The multimode optical fiber interface supports applications where copper cable link distance, bandwidth, weight or bulk make the use of twisted pair, twinax or quadrax copper conductors unacceptable.
This solution is ideal for use in avionic network and display systems where small size, reduced weight and resistance to harsh environments are required. Protokraft's new Spitfire Series Mil-Dtl-38999 Ethernet Optical Media Converters support the full range of common avionics network interfaces including both Fast and Gigabit Ethernet. All versions are fully compliant with the applicable ARINC 664 or IEEE-802.3:2005 specification requirements.
The Mil-Dtl-38999 mounting configuration of these advance optoelectronics components offers numerous performance and reliability advantages to avionics network equipment designers:
- Eliminates intra-enclosure fiber optic cable assemblies
- Reclaims 42% of the optical link budget without incurring other penalties
- Eliminates optical fiber backplanes - signals are routed through the electrical backplane
- Reclaims electronic line-card real estate from optical transceivers and disconnects
Designed to operate in harsh environments, these new media converters feature excellent thermal characteristics, high tolerance to shock and vibration and corrosion resistant aluminum shells for exceptional EMI/RFI performance. Standard case operating temperature range is -40oC to +85oC, with a standard storage temperature range of -55oC to +100oC. The Spitfire Series Ethernet Optical Media Converters operate at link distances up to 2.0 Kilometers. All operate from +3.3VDC power supplies.
Protokraft's Spitfire Series Ethernet Optical Media Converters are competitively priced compared to the typical discrete optical devices and systems which have been designed for avionics applications and/or harsh environments. Spitfire Ethernet optical media converters are available now with lead times for all versions in the range of 10 to 12 weeks ARO. |
