With more than 340,000 drivers in New Jersey under the age of 20, keeping young drivers safe is a top priority for Travelers of New Jersey. And now, with the recent appointment of Lisa Pollak to Governor Jon Corzine’s Teen Driving Study Commission, Travelers of New Jersey will continue to be at the forefront of teen driving initiatives in the state. Pollak currently serves as general counsel at Travelers of New Jersey and is joined on the Commission by state legislators, school administrators, government and law enforcement officials, AAA, driving schools, a teen driver and a PTA representative – all personally appointed by Governor Corzine.
The Commission was formed last year to study teen driving, specifically, how to combat risks inherent to teen drivers such as inexperience, speed, distractions and low seat belt usage – all factors which contribute to car crashes being the number one killer of teenagers. After conducting a comprehensive review of teen driving, the group will make recommendations aimed at keeping teens safer on New Jersey roads.
Pollak has been with Travelers of New Jersey for six years. Working with the Commission allows Pollak to combine her insurance expertise with her community involvement. “At Travelers of New Jersey, we work with families to make sure they have everything they need to stay safe and protected, and that includes teenage drivers,” said Pollak. “In my community, I’ve been a school board member for more than ten years and we’ve tackled some teen driving issues, plus, I have teenagers of my own so this issue really hits close to home.”
Pollak and her fellow appointees will carefully analyze the State’s Graduated Driver License (GDL) and driver education programs. Significant attention will also being given to parental involvement. Recent studies show that the single biggest influence on teenagers is the driving habits of their own parents.
The Commission meets bi-weekly gathering data and insight from police officers, driver education teachers, trauma surgeons and prosecutors. The public is also invited to share ideas. A final report with recommendations is due to Governor Corzine by March.
