How To Know If Your Diabetes Medication Is Working
Publish Date : 2/22/2008 7:52:00 AM   Source : Health News Onlypunjab.com

If you are taking oral medication for your diabetes, it is important to know if it is working. The best way to tell if it is working is by monitoring your blood sugar levels. You can do this easily enough with a blood glucose monitor. Blood glucose monitors are available anywhere diabetic supplies are sold, including at some online outlets that offer them at a sizeable discount.

The blood sugar monitor is a simple device that can be used to test the blood daily to make sure that the blood sugar levels are within normal range. If your blood sugar is continually high, it could be an indication that the medication you are taking is not effective.

One reason why doctors want you to keep a record of your blood sugar levels on your meter is to determine whether the treatment they are giving you is effective. It is important to bring the blood sugars down as quick as possible, to avoid permanent damage to the kidneys. Your doctor will ask you to monitor your blood sugar more frequently until he or she gets the right dosage.

Signs that your medication may not be working include increased diabetes symptoms such as excessive thirst, frequent urination and weakness. You may also experience kidney pain because your kidneys are working overtime to rid your body of waste. Blurry vision is also a classic sign of diabetes. If you are on medication and begin to experience these symptoms, see your doctor. Chances are that you will need a different dosage of medication.

At the opposite end of the spectrum is hypoglycemia. This is when your blood sugar is too low. Your medication may be giving you too much insulin, causing the blood sugar to drop. This can cause blackouts, weakness and fainting spells. Low blood sugar is just as dangerous as high blood sugar. Both can cause the diabetic to go into a diabetic coma that can become a matter of life or death.

If you have diabetes and start experiencing any of the diabetic symptoms described here, take your blood sugar. Even if it is normal, which it probably will not be, see your doctor right away. The sooner that you treat the condition, the less damage it will do to your kidneys or other organs.

If you feel generally unwell and feel that your diabetes medication is not working, or if you find that your blood sugar is exceedingly high or low, do not wait to see the doctor but take a trip to the emergency room of the hospital. Here they will be able to treat you right away before your body goes into shock because of too much or too little insulin.

A diabetic coma can lead to death. If you medication is not working, do not ignore this fact, but get treatment from your doctor immediately. Chances are that he or she will just have to change the prescription. Immediate treatment when the medication is not working, however, is necessary.
