Julie Azuma, founder and president of Different Roads to Learning, Inc., has been recognized by Cambridge Who’s Who for her selfless dedication to helping children with autism and other developmental disabilities. Azuma, a Cambridge Who’s Who honored member, has devoted more than a decade to creating comprehensive product lines designed to educate and inspire the developmentally challenged as well as those who care for them.
When her six-year old daughter Miranda was diagnosed with autism, Azuma left a career in the apparel industry – which included stints for Jordache, Givenchy Sport and Collegetown – to start Different Roads to Learning, Inc., in 1995. The Different Roads to Learning, Inc. online store and catalog offers over 300 products such as flash cards, videos and books that provide parents and professionals support in their handling of children with autism.
Azuma founded DRL Books, Inc. as a supplementary literature resource that offers teaching methods and advice on children’s education and applied behavior analysis, written by experts in the field. The Mind and Memory Store – Azuma’s latest venture, started in 2005 – addresses adults who are concerned about keeping mentally fit. While managing the daily operations of her business, Azuma finds great satisfaction in being able to provide service to over 30,000 customers through the three portals combined.
Azuma has actively served the Asian American community for 25 years. She is chairperson of Asian Women in Business, a Foundation board member of Eden II and a board member of the Japanese American Association. She was featured on CNBC’s “Autism: The Hidden Epidemic?” series and was listed as one of Inc. Magazine’s top 26 most fascinating entrepreneurs. Azuma received her bachelor of fine arts in apparel design from Washington University.
