Giving advice on dating someone with a daughter can be tricky. As a matter of fact dating someone with children period is an entirely different experience from dating someone that is single. You have to be in a relationship with the person, the child, and usually the ex. So it is a good idea to consider this before getting into the relationship at all.

The thing to remember when dating someone with a daughter is that you are not only getting into a relationship with that person, but you are also entering into a relationship with the daughter as well. If you make a decision to go ahead and date a woman with a daughter, there are some things to follow that can make the experience a positive one.

One this is to not go out of your way to gain the daughter's approval. I have noticed many guys do this and it usually backfires. The daughter can usually tell and ends up resenting you more for trying so hard. Be yourself and if she likes you, she likes you. If she doesn't then at least you were being yourself and you will have nothing to regret.

That being said, most of the problems in these types of relationships come when this happens. If this is the case, then you have to decide whether this is just a short term something or if you are looking for a long term relationship. Many guys just think that they can date the mom and forget about the daughter...well this may work for a while, but if you thinking more long term then you will have to learn to get along with the daughter.

One thing to help with this is to find some common ground with her. Many children resent the mom's boyfriend just because they think it's the thing to do...so it's your job to show her otherwise. Keep conversations casual and don't talk negative about her father. Also make sure to make it comfortable to be around you, as will help her to accept you with time. Just remember to keep your status and don't try too hard.
