Stream Processors Inc.'s Storm-1 SP16HP Chip Named Finalist in EDN’s Innovation Awards
Publish Date : 1/14/2008 6:39:00 AM   Source : Technology News Onlypunjab.com

Stream Processors Inc. (SPI), a fabless semiconductor company focused on making parallel processing simple, today announced that its Storm-1 SP16HP-G220, the world’s highest-performing DSP, has been named a finalist for EDN’s 18th Annual Innovation Awards. The magazine annually recognizes outstanding achievements in state-of-the-art semiconductor design and the chip was nominated in the multicore microprocessor category. The magazine’s readers will help select the winner.

When SPI launched the Storm-1 family last year, the SP16HP was introduced as the world’s highest-performance, yet simple-to-program DSP with up to 448 GMACS at 20 microwatt per MMAC. Combining ASIC-level cost points with exceptional performance and full software programmability makes it ideal for DSP applications such as video surveillance, telepresence, wireless basestations, and broadcasting. SPI’s chief scientist and driving force behind the Storm-1 stream processor architecture, William Dally, was also recognized as a finalist for the magazine’s “Innovator of the Year” award. “To be recognized as a finalist in the multicore microprocessor category is an honor for the team here at SPI which has devoted untold hours to the success of our Storm-1 design,” said Chip Stearns, president and CEO of SPI. “We are dedicated to bringing the power of a C-programmable DSP architecture to applications that previously required multiple, discrete chips or fixed-function custom ICs. The Storm-1 SP16HP represents our best effort so far toward that end and we see a long road of innovation ahead.”

Now in its 18th year, EDN’s Innovation Awards program recognizes and honors outstanding engineering professionals and products. The program nurtures the award-winning designers of the future by donating a portion of the proceeds from the nominations and the awards event to an engineering college or university chosen by the “Innovator of the Year”.

During the month of February, EDN’s worldwide audience of electronics engineers and engineering managers will use an online ballot to select the ultimate winners from among the finalists. EDN’s editorial staff and Editorial Advisory Board also take part in determining the final winners. Visit www.EDN.com/innovation18 to review each of the nominees. Winners will be announced April 14.
