We will not allow chemical hub even outside Nandigram: Mamata
Publish Date : 6/29/2007 7:23:00 AM   Source : South Asia News Onlypunjab.com

Asserting that the proposed chemical hub would not be allowed to come up even outside Nandigram, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee today said she would continue to resist acquisition of land from the people.

Announcing that her party would take out 'bhookha' processions in Delhi and Thiruvananthapuram respectively on July 2 and 7 to highlight the plight of farmers of Singur and Nandigram, she alleged that the Left Front Government was trying to grab land of the common people in the name of industrialisation.

'' We shall not allow setting up of the chemical hub. We are not against industrialisation, but the Government is grabbing land and natural resources in the name of industrialisation. It is curbing the people's right to property and livelihood,'' she told a news conference at her residence.

Ms Banerjee's comment came a day after Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee denied that the Government was having plans to set up an SEZ, recently approved by the centre, at Mahishadal in East Midnapore district.

The proposed SEZ, to be set up by the Hyderabad-based Ramky Industries Limited for pharmaceuticals industries, will be a part of the chemical hub.

Even as the Government had to abandon the plan for setting up the hub at Nandigram following violent resistance from the local people, the Chief Minister said the project would come up elsewhere, preferably in its vicinity. He also sought opinions from different political parties for reaching a consensus on the issue.

However, accusing the Chief Minister of suppressing facts, the Trinamool leader said the Centre would not have approved proposal for the SEZ without the state's consent.

'' I can challenge one that the Centre can not give an approval without the state Government's consent. The Chief Minister is suppressing facts and misleading the people. He should be sacked,'' she said.

Ms Banerjee alleged that it was in the similar way that the Left Government had 'cheated' the people at Singur and Nandigram in the name of industrialisation.

Making clear that more trouble was in store for the state Government for acquisition of land for future industries, Ms Banerjee said her party would not take part in the proposed all-party meeting for execution of the proposed steel plant of the Bhushan Group of Industries at Salanpur in Bardhaman district.

'' Why should we participate in an all-party meeting for grabbing the people's land ? It will be a treachery with the people...the CPI(M) is hatching a plan to sell out Bengal and we can not be a part of it,'' she said.

Reiterating that the 1894 Act for land acqusition should be amended, Ms Banerjee said the Trinamool Congress would give representation in this regard to the President and the Prime Minister.
