The California Charter Schools Association today announced that it has selected former Youth Policy Institute Executive Director for Charter Schools Yvette King-Berg to serve as the Association’s General Manager in the Los Angeles region. King-Berg also previously served as a teacher and assistant director at Fenton Avenue Charter School in the San Fernando Valley.
King-Berg takes over for Jose Cole-Gutiérrez, who was appointed in December to serve as the Executive Director of the Charter Schools Division for the Los Angeles Unified School District.
“I see charter schools as a big part of the solution for our public school system and am pleased to become a part of this great organization,” said King-Berg. “It’s my vision to open more doors of opportunity to thousands of public school students who are seeking access to high-quality schools that will prepare them to succeed.”
“Yvette’s experience as a public school teacher and as a school-based administrator along with her incredible interpersonal skills make her a solid addition to our team,” said Caprice Young, president and CEO of the California Charter Schools Association. “Yvette will be an invaluable addition to our team, as we continue to forge new partnerships with school districts and shepherd educators and community groups along the path to opening more high-quality charter public schools.”
As General Manager, King-Berg will lead the Association’s efforts to help new charter schools open, improve the quality of existing charter schools and foster positive relationships between charter schools and school districts throughout the Southland, including the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Immediately prior to joining the Association, King-Berg helped to start up and lead two charter schools under the sponsorship of the Youth Policy Institute - Monseńor Oscar Romero Charter School and Bert Corona Charter School. King-Berg previously served for eight years with Project Grad LA, where she led an effort to promote academic achievement for 20,000 urban students in the San Fernando feeder schools of the Los Angeles Unified School District. She oversaw four Early Education Centers, nine elementary schools and four middle schools that feed into San Fernando High School, and led efforts that focused on early intervention, integration of services, comprehensive feeder pattern planning and increased access to college. She previously taught at Fenton Avenue Elementary School, which converted into one of California’s first charter schools in 1993.
King-Berg received her Bachelor’s Degree from Westmont College and holds several Master’s Degrees. She is a resident of Granada Hills.
