Avnet Technology Solutions, an operating group of Avnet, Inc. (NYSE: AVT) and a distributor focused on enterprise computer products and embedded subsystems, today announced the immediate availability of an inline data de-duplication solution to help Avnet’s Sun Microsystems partners in the U.S. and Canada expand their storage offerings.
The new solution incorporates industry-leading products from Sun and Diligent Technologies, a world-class innovator in enterprise-class disk-based data protection solutions. It is designed to help Avnet’s Sun partners meet the unique storage needs of their small-to-mid-sized business (SMB) customers by providing them with a cost-effective solution that improves back up processes, reduces infrastructure costs, ensures data integrity and reliability, and simplifies management and support.
“Avnet is committed to investing in the solutions, markets and services that will help our partners grow their businesses and gain a competitive advantage,” said Mike Hurst, vice president and general manager, Avnet Technology Solutions Americas, Sun Solutions group. “Our data de-duplication solution is a perfect example of this commitment. The solution gives our partners a unique offering for the SMB market helping them to maximize their customers’ current storage investments and provide a compelling cost savings.”
Completely integrated by Avnet, the data de-duplication solution combines Sun’s Sun Fire™ x4200 M2 server and a Sun™ StorageTek™ 2530 SAS storage array with Diligent’s ProtecTIER™ inline data de-duplication software. It delivers the performance of a four-way server and the benefits of affordable, reliable SAS storage with 6.3 TB of physical capacity. ProtecTIER enables a capacity expansion of up to 25 times the physical capacity of the system, bringing the usable capacity of the system to beyond 150 TB of backup data. Powered by Diligent’s patent-pending HyperFactor™ de-duplication technology, the solution provides users with significant performance and capacity benefits. The solution is available as a pre-configured, fully integrated solution and is easily deployed into existing backup environments.
“This is an excellent solution for the mid-range customer that is feeling the crunch of growing data protection needs, shrinking backup windows, and reduced budgets,” said Doron Kempel, Chairman and CEO of Diligent Technologies. “Avnet and Sun have defined a de-duplication solution that combines the enterprise strengths of ProtecTIER—Performance and Capacity—with world-class server and storage hardware tuned for the mid-sized data center environment.”
“Data de-duplication is a great door-opener with customers because it provides a concrete return on investment by reducing storage infrastructure and management costs,” said Nick Cellentani, vice president of operations and storage consulting, Adexis. “Our customers want to know that they are absolutely getting the most value possible out of their IT investments. The new Avnet solution gives us one more way to make them happy customers.”
