Escalated Drug Use in Young Adults Reaches Home of NFL Coach, Narconon Arrowhead Responds
Publish Date : 11/21/2007 6:51:00 AM   Source : Europe News OnlyPunjab.com

Andy Reid, coach of the NFL Philadelphia Eagles, has had better years. In 2005, Coach Reid took his team all the way to Superbowl XXXIX. Through week 9 of the NFL season, Coach Reid's team has recorded 3 wins and 5 losses and is currently in last place in the NFC East. Perhaps Coach Reid may have more on his mind this year than just football. On Thursday, November 2, both of Coach Reid's sons were sentenced to jail for drug charges, according to Pennsylvania's Montgomery County court records.

Garrett Reid, 24, and brother Britt Reid, 22, are among an alarming and growing trend of escalated drug use in young adults.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration's National Survey on Drug Use and Health, the age group impacted the most by substance abuse issues is 18 to 25 year olds. Among these young adults, one out of five has used an illicit drug in the last month. Overall, in the last year, one in ten Americans used marijuana and more than one in four young adults did the same. Nationally, more than seven million people used cocaine, most of them young adults. More than fourteen million people abused a prescription drug, with teens and young adults experiencing much higher rates of use than other age groups.

Ryan Thorpe, Director of Admissions at Narconon Arrowhead, one of the country's leading drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers stated, "Our best wishes go out to Coach Reid and his family during this difficult time. We know that an addiction gone untreated really does end up in only three places: the hospital, the morgue, or like we have seen with the Reid boys, jail. The good news is that Coach Reid's sons are still alive and still have the opportunity to get help."

Garrett and Britt got into trouble during separate issues on January 30, 2007, according to ESPN.com News Services which also cited that both boys had been to rehab for addiction issues multiple times. Based off testimony from their court appearances, both Garrett and Britt were remorseful and want to clean up and move on with their lives.

Thorpe commented, "The average success rate of recovery in this country is pretty dismal these days. Most programs don't address the problem of addiction on all levels and that leaves a person who sought treatment without the full benefits which are going to keep them clean." Added Thorpe, "At Narconon Arrowhead, our 70% plus success rate speaks for itself. Our long term program offers biophysical treatment to help a person rid their bodies of harmful toxins and drug cravings, counseling to help with emotional and mental issues, and life skills so a person can go back into life and be healthy, productive, and happy."

The Narconon program was founded in 1966 by William Benitez in Arizona State Prison, and is based on the humanitarian works of L. Ron Hubbard. In more than 120 centers around the world, Narconon programs restore drug and alcohol abusers and addicts to a clean and sober lifestyle.
