The Mitchell Report Spurs the Agency for Sports Ethics to Promote its Anti-doping Program to MLB
Publish Date : 12/19/2007 3:19:00 AM   Source : Sports News Onlypunjab.com

In response to the Mitchell report recommendations released on December 13, 2007, the Agency for Sports Ethics, LLC ("ASE") (http://www.agencyforsportsethics.org) will promote its anti-doping program to MLB and other related stakeholders, including the Players Association.

ASE, through its wholly owned subsidiary the Agency for Cycling Ethics, Inc. ("ACE"), currently administers an anti-doping program in the sport of professional cycling. As widely reported, professional cycling has suffered immeasurable damage to its image from widespread and institutionalized doping by many of its athletes. Only recently have a number of pro-cycling teams taken it upon themselves to ensure their athletes are competing clean and have turned to ACE to provide an effective and affordable solution.

ASE's anti-doping program differs significantly from traditional programs. Traditional programs are ineffective because direct detection of most substances is only possible for a few days after administration or in some cases is not possible at all. Our approach trades specificity for sensitivity and thus allows us to detect the use of prohibited substances and methods administered in low doses. Our testing also remains highly sensitive long after the time an athlete ends administration. Additionally, as in the case with Human Growth Hormone (hGH), our techniques can raise suspicions as to it's use by athletes, acknowledging the difficultly in Growth Hormone detection by traditional anti-doping techniques. Our program involves year round testing of every athlete. The key to our program is the combination of a high volume of testing and the longitudinal analysis of the data over an extended period of time.

"If all stakeholders party to MLB are serious about eliminating doping from America's favorite pastime, then ASE's anti-doping program can provide a customized and complete anti-doping program solution that meets many of the recommendations of the Mitchell report - it is independently managed, transparent, conducted year-round, collections are random, and the program is inherently flexible for detecting new methods of doping. We believe there is currently no better program out there," comments Jim Winett, ASE Chief Executive Officer.

An effective anti-doping program requires attaining a balance between the underlying science and the associated cost of the program. Paul Scott, ASE Chief Science Officer adds, "There is a practical limit as to how many biological samples an athlete can reasonably be expected to provide over a prolonged period of time. Additionally, teams and leagues cannot be expected to implement an anti-doping program at any cost. As a consequence of the operational experience we have gained from implementing a program for professional cycling, we know where that balance lies."

About The Agency for Sports Ethics, LLC
The Agency for Sports Ethics, LLC is committed to the highest ethical standards in all sports. ASE's global goal is to provide the tools and programs necessary to ensure sponsors, teams, athletes and the public that participants in the ASE family of programs compete drug-free and embody ethical competition on a level playing field. ASE intends to use the latest technologies, employ the most up-to-date proven methodologies and work with the foremost scientific experts in anti-doping in conjunction with sports' governing bodies to ensure athletes compete PURE.
