Local Statistical Snapshot
- Far surpassing even its national surge in popularity, the Bulldog skyrocketed to 2nd place on the L.A. list. The breed has made the Los Angeles Top 10 for three consecutive years and now ranks the Bulldog highest of any city in the nation.
- A close relative to the Bulldog, the French Bulldog made its first recent appearance on the L.A. list in 8th place. San Francisco and Los Angeles were the only cities in the nation to include the French Bulldog in their Top 10 lists. This adorable and affectionate breed is on the rise nationwide with a 404% increase in popularity over the past decade.
- The Los Angeles list would not be complete without a plethora of portable pooches: the Yorkshire Terrier, Pug, Pomeranian and Maltese all made it onto L.A.’s Top 10 again, with only minor changes in position.
- LA residents can see and learn more about their favorite breeds on Saturday, February 2 when the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship -- one the country’s most prestigious dog shows -- airs on Animal Planet from 8-11pm.
- Cheer on one of L.A.’s own – Welsh Terrier “Ch Noraly of the New Husken.” Owned by L.A. residents, “Noorche” will compete for $50,000 and the Best in Show title. A rare breed, the Welsh Terrier is low on the list in L.A. and ranked only 97th nationally.
“For the last three years, the residents of Los Angeles were ahead of nation in terms of their affection for the Bulldog,” says AKC spokesperson Lisa Peterson. “They now rank this beloved breed more highly than any other U.S. city. This year, Los Angelinos also recognized a breed that’s rising through the national ranks, the smaller but equally adorable French Bulldog.”
