Amazing Dinosaur Species
Publish Date : 6/19/2007 3:14:00 AM   Source : Science and Technology News Onlypunjab.com

There were many different types of dinosaur ("species"). In this article, we will review a few of the better known and more interesting types.

1. Allosaurus was a large carnivore (meat-eater). Some scientists believed that Allosaurus was a scavenger, whereas others believe that it actively hunted its prey

2. Ankylosaurus was a massive plant-eating dinosaur, that was completely covered in armor. Its armor included a heavy club at the end of its tail that was used for defense, and four large spikes on its head.

3. Apatosaurus was a plant-eating dinosaur that grew to over 70 feet (21 metres). It had a tiny head at the end of a very long neck, and a long whip-like tail. Apatosaurus is sometimes known as Brontosaurus, because when the first two fossils were found by Othniel C. Marsh in the 19th century, he didn't realize that they were specimens of the same species, and hence used both names.

4. Iguanodon was only the second dinosaur ever discovered. It was a plant-eater, and had a conical spike that was attached to the thumb of each hand.

5. Ornithomimus was a fast running dinosaur. It ran on two legs, holding its body parallel to the ground, counter-balanced by its long tail. Ornithomimus probably ate small animals, insects, fruits and perhaps other dinosaur's eggs.

6. Spinosaurus is perhaps the largest carnivorous (meat-eating) dinosaur known. It had a massive fin on its back that was probably used for temperature regulation. Another interesting fact about Spinosaurus, is that unusually for a carnivorous dinosaur, it could probably walk on all fours.

7. Stegosaurus was a herbivore (plant-eater) that was covered in bony plates (that may have been used for protection and/or temperature regulation), as well as having pairs of spikes at the end of its tail.

8. Triceratops is quite a familiar herbivorous (plant-eating) dinosaur - most of us have seen it in movies. Triceratops had three horns on its head, as well as massive bony frill on its head that protected its neck.

9. Tyrannosaurus Rex is probably the most famous carnivorous (meat-eating) dinosaur. Its name means "tyrant king lizard". Some scientists argue that Tyrannosaurus Rex was a scavenger, whereas other believe it was an fearsome active predator.

10. Velociraptor was a smallish (roughly man-size) carnivore (meat-eater) that is familiar to us from the Jurassic Park movies. Velociraptor was probably highly intelligent and hunted in packs. It is also noticeable for the vicious looking curved claw on its hind feet.
