So is there really such a thing as success with adwords marketing? You bet there is! But nobody succeeds first time. The ones who succeed are the ones who stick with it. So if you quit, you’re just leaving the field to the competition.
That’s fine, you say, but I was losing so much money. You may think you just can’t afford to try any more. Well, success with adwords marketing means organizing your campaign so you DON’T lose money. Here are some tactics for keeping an eye on the pennies.
- Always remember, Google is in this to make money for themselves. They will provide help and tips, but at the end of the day, it’s not their problem if you lose money. You many lose sleep but they won’t. They will sometimes suggest whopping bids of up to $30 per keyword. You decide how much you bid, based on how much you can afford. Lower the maximum bid to what you can afford and enter that for all your keywords. (But keep it to a level that won’t mean your keywords are disabled.)
- Never forget, you’re not out to maximize your clicks. Remember you pay every time somebody clicks – if that click doesn’t then result in a sale, you’ve lost that money. The skill of success with adwords marketing is to target your keywords so that they ONLY get clicks from likely buyers, and discourage the rest.
- Research has shown that the top three positions on any results page aren’t the most profitable as they get “untargeted” clicks. Target your bids to get your ads at positions 4-6. This involves careful tracking until you get it right.
- Forget bidding on the big general keywords. The large companies will always outbid you. And even if you do spend a fortune to get on the first page for those keywords, you will get a lot of the wrong sort of clicks as the keywords aren’t specific enough – it’s just not worth it. Concentrate on finding the cheaper niche keywords and phrases. If you’re serious about success with adwords marketing, it can pay you to invest in a keyword tool which shows you which words have high search and low competition.
- Keep tracking how your campaigns are doing. If keywords are getting a lot of clicks but no sales, take them out. Don’t say “I’ll see if they do better next week.” DO IT NOW.
- Google gives you two options for displaying your ads – Search Network listings and Content Match listings. Search Network listings means they are displayed as Adwords – the normal “sponsored ads” on search results pages. Content Match listings mean they are displayed as adsense ads on web pages that have relevant content. Google will display them as both, unless you specifically disable the content match option at the beginning – it’s lucrative for them, but not necessarily for you. You are strongly advised to disable this option, at least until you are very sure a keyword is going to be profitable. Sticking to the search network option gives you more control and enables proper tracking.
These are tactics that many people don’t use. Follow them, persevere and you will surely get into profit – which is what success with adwords marketing is all about! So if you have quit, there’s no excuse – get back in there!
