As the year winds down, many people carefully consider how they can better their life in the new year. Petland says that for 2008, animal lovers can make healthy resolutions not only for themselves, but also for their beloved pets.
“Diet and exercise are frequently top of mind at the beginning of the new year,” said Julie Washburn, public relations coordinator, Petland, Inc. “It’s the perfect opportunity for responsible pet owners to make a resolution – and stick to it – to help their furry best friend enjoy a healthy life.”
In order for pets to be healthy, Petland says that it is up to pet owners to lead the way.
A good diet is key to proper pet health
Veterinary Pet Insurance of Brea, Calif., reports that 25 to 40 percent of pets in America are overweight with obesity being defined as 10 to 15 percent more than ideal body weight for their specific breed. One way to curb obesity in pets is to provide them with a monitored nutritious diet.
"Obese pets are at a high risk for health concerns including diabetes, heart disease and joint ailments. These overweight pets are often fed foods that lack true nutritional value," said Washburn.
Combine pet fitness with diet for results
Resolving only to change Fido or Fluffy’s diet will not necessarily guarantee the pet a healthier life. Petland says that a nutritious diet must be combined with regular exercise in order for the pet to reap the healthy benefits.
Exercise tips for pets
Here are a few tips from Petland to make exercise safe and fun for pets:
Be cautious and monitor your pet for signs of fatigue or difficulty breathing.
When you walk your pet, make sure it is on a leash at all times.
If exercising outside, make sure you are on grass as often as possible. A pet’s paws can become irritated if they are on gravel, concrete or asphalt.
If it is very cold or hot outside, keep the pet’s activity to a low pace or opt for indoor playtime and exercise instead.
