Reliance Infocomm, the telecom services arm of corporate behemoth Reliance Industries, Thursday said it had entered into an agreement with the department of posts to sell mobile phone cards through post offices.
Under the agreement, Reliance Infocomm will initially sell prepaid mobile cards through select post offices in Andhra Pradesh. The sales network will be expanded in a phased manner in the coming years.
"The marketing arrangement with the department of posts in Andhra Pradesh is a step forward towards increasing the availability of prepaid vouchers," said S.P. Shukla, president (wireless products and services) of Reliance Infocomm.
"We look forward to the success of this initiative and subsequently extending it to the rest of the country for greater customer convenience."
T.S. Govindarajan, Chief Postmaster General (Andhra Pradesh circle), said: "The infrastructure of the postal department that covers all parts of the country has been used by the people for generations.
"Today, the post office is a multi-service point for customers and we are happy to tie up with Reliance Infocomm."
Reliance Infocomm plans to expand its network in Andhra Pradesh by making prepaid mobile phone cards available at 104 head post offices, 2,364 sub post offices and over 13,000 branch post offices across the state.
The firm has a subscriber base of over 10 million.
