Yuvan Shankar Raja, the son of music maestro Ilayaraja, has certainly come a long way in the past few years. And he adds another feather to his cap with "Ram".
He is today considered the rightful successor to ace A.R. Rahman - a transition that started with "Kaadhal Kondein".
"7 G Rainbow Colony" was a success and if the music of "Ram" turns out to match it, Raja will quite definitely have established himself as the numero uno in the Tamil music industry.
The new album starts with the peppy "Boom Boom", a pleasant number that has the potential to be the next big thing in Chennai's radio stations. The song is belted out by Yuvan, Premgi, Tippu and Jyotsna - whose strong voice succeeds in capturing the imagination.
"Kannai Kalaimaane" composed by Ilayaraja is arguably the best lullaby ever composed in the history of Tamil films. Today Raja has followed in his footsteps with "Aaraareeraaro", the highpoint of the whole album.
There are no two ways to describe "Yaaro Arivaal". It is brilliant. Sung by Madhu Balakrishnan, the mellifluous rhythm and haunting voice does to "Ram" what the "Rainbow Colony" theme did to "7G Rainbow Colony".
For anyone who has a passion for good lyrics, it is a treat to listen to "Nizhaline Nijamum" sung by the father-son duo Yesudas and Vijay Yesudas.
Like in "7 G Rainbow Colony", "Ram" also has a superb instrumental track.
On the whole, the album will be a welcome addition to your collection.
