South African cricketer Jacques Kallis' runs during the Test series with England raised more than 6,000 rands ($1,000) to help terminally ill children.
In Kallis' "Rands for Runs" project, the insurance company Mutual and Federal agreed to sponsor Kallis with 10 rands for every run he scored, to be paid to the Reach for a Dream Foundation. The organisation attempts to grant a last wish to terminally ill children.
Kallis said he was happy with his form and the money raised so far but was keen to make many more runs during the seven-game Standard Bank ODI series against England beginning Sunday.
"My form was good at the start of the Test series and although I failed at the Wanderers (in Johannesburg), it was really great to end off with a big knock at (Centurion). England won the Test series 2-1.
"I am delighted to be able to make a small contribution to the Reach for a Dream Foundation. The kids are close to our hearts in the South African dressing room and it was great that some of them were able to watch the Test series."
Last month the foundation arranged for a terminally ill child to meet her idol Indian actor Shah Rukh Khan when he came here for the South African leg of his world tour. Unfortunately the child died without even knowing of the surprise planned for her, but the foundation arranged for another overjoyed cancer-stricken child to meet the actor.
