Virender Sehwag hit a fluent 83 as Kapil Dev XI defeated Aamir Khan XI by two wickets in a charity match played for the victims of the tsunami here Friday night, raising well over Rs.100 million ($2mn).
The match, played for the Airtel Cup and titled The Hope, was played between an array of star cricketers, past and present, and Bollywood stars at the Wankhede Stadium.
Some other well-known players like badminton ace P. Gopi Chand, who turned up as a commentator, former India hockey captain Pargat Singh and football skipper P.K. Bannerjee were also present at the day-night encounter.
Retired India pace bowler Javagal Srinath, who hit the winning run off the penultimate ball, was all serious as he swung his bat and even connected the ball almost every time.
Kapil, India's only World Cup-winning captain, was the other unbeaten batsman but he pulled a muscle while trying too hard.
Each boundary hit during the match was worth Rs.5,000 and each six was worth Rs.10,000. The total amount raised thus was Rs.390,000.
Victory for Kapil's team meant that Mohammed Kaif's 113 not only went waste but he also lost out to Sehwag for the Man of the Match award.
Former India cricket captain Ajit Wadekar, the adjudicator for the Man of the Match award, chose Sehwag for his innings.
At the end of the match, Kapil announced a series of steps being taken to raise more money for the Dec 26 tsunami disaster that killed over 280,000 people across South and Southeast Asia.
"We have raised over Rs.100 million from this match and are in the process of raising more through the auction of a bat signed by India's top people," announced Kapil.
A large number of people turned up to watch a mix of the serious and not-so-serious performance by the celebrities.
Also present during the match were former India cricket captain Mohammed Azharuddin and his film star wife Sangeeta Bijlani and a host of other film stars.
